. . . . ."Project 2 x 4," mixed media, electronics and
the primary colors of light, 33.5 X 75.5 X 77.5 inches. There
are two Fresnel lenses 24 x 30 inches and four transparent paintings
24 x 30 inches within the module, 1988.
. . . . . When the paintings are facing an external source of
light and the lenses are in the shadow of that light the transmission
of light from the paintings are projected into mid-air (focal
point of the lens). This projection occurs outside of the module
mid-air before the viewer. Its characteristics are light, in reverse
orientation to the paintings, and occurs in variable levels of
three dimensional space. The visual elements in this dimensional
space are kinetically active in relationship to the viewer's position
before them.
. . . . .This piece is a kinetic interactive work of art; it utilizes
the viewer's participation to determine the visual elements, rate
of change and transformation of the painting. This is achieved
by the participant's direct contact with three touch sensitive
dimmers of the control module. Each 'dimmer controls one separate
color: red, green, and blue. This luminosity, which needs an environment
of low light level to function at full capacity, interacts with
the primary colors of the painting. This interaction between the
two sets of primary colors, controlled by the participant, determines
the visual elements of the painting at any given point in time.
This change and transformation occurs in both side A (mid-air
projection) and B (multiple layers of painting).
